This program is read by the author.
The mental wellbeing of our children is shockingly poor. Marc Brackett, author of Permission to Feel, knows why. And he knows what we can do.
"We have a crisis on our hands, and its victims are our children."
Marc Brackett is a professor in Yale University's Child Study Center and founding director of the Yale Center for Emotional Intelligence. In his 25 years as an "emotion scientist", he has developed a remarkably effective plan to improve the lives of children and adults - a blueprint for understanding our emotions and using them wisely so that they help, rather than hinder, our success and well-being. The core of his approach is a legacy from his childhood, from an astute uncle who gave him permission to feel. He was the first adult who managed to see Marc, listen to him, and recognize the suffering, bullying, and abuse he'd endured. And that was the beginning of Marc's awareness that what he was going through was temporary. He wasn't alone, he wasn't stuck on a timeline, and he wasn't "wrong" to feel scared, isolated, and angry. Now, best of all, he could do something about it.
In the decades since, Marc has led large research teams and raised tens of millions of dollars to investigate the roots of emotional well-being. His prescription for healthy children (and their parents, teachers, and schools) is a system called RULER, a high-impact and fast-effect approach to understanding and mastering emotions that has already transformed the thousands of schools that have adopted it. RULER has been proven to reduce stress, depression, and burnout and enhance to encourage higher academic achievement. This book is the culmination of Marc's development of RULER and his way to share the strategies and skills with listeners around the world. It is tested, and it works.
This audiobook combines rigor, science, passion, and inspiration in equal parts. Too many children and adults are suffering; they are ashamed of their feelings and emotionally unskilled, but they don't have to be. Marc Brackett's life mission is to reverse this course, and this audiobook can show you how.

A relatable book on emotional intelligence Many books about feelings come across as mushy, but that's not the case with this one. This one is about emotional intelligence, and it's based on fifty years of research. It contains classroom and workplace stories, which make it more relatable. The book shares details on how society is impacted by things such as stressful and joyful events. We can change some things just by paying attention to our emotions. The book is designed to help readers understand how they feel, as well as their triggers, and then how that can impact us on a daily basis. The book is written in a way that an average reader can follow it, as it's not full of medical lingo or complicated steps. People in management positions in various professions (from teachers to engineers to doctors) could benefit from reading this book.Disclaimer: I received a complimentary copy, but I wasn't required to leave a positive review.SO helpful!! This book made me think actively about how I communicate with literally everyone around me. From dear friends, to family members, to coworkers, to the snippy guy at the cash register during the lunch rush (maybe he's not just a jerk, we all have bad days!) Marc Brackett gives actionable advice and healthy, recognizable explanations. A great read! The Importance of Unlocking Emotions As a licensed psychotherapist, I am interested in books that might be of help in my practice, so I chose to read and review this advance copy. Seeing the title, I expected a self-help book on accessing feelings. I know that it is beneficial to become aware of and identify feelings, as otherwise feelings unacknowledged feelings can get in the way of other processes. But Dr. Brackett’s message goes much further, and the assistance he offers is much greater. Feelings, we learn, are a central component in all areas of our lives. And having established the importance of unlocking the power of our emotions, the author offers an evidence-based system for integrating social and emotional learning, utilizing a system with the acronym RULER: Recognizing, Understanding, Labeling, Expressing, and Regulating emotion. This is an excellent book, offering important information for people of all ages and a clear system for putting the information into use. I certainly plan to integrate it into my clinical practice. My thanks to author, publisher, and NetGalley for furnishing an advance copy to read and review.
