An instant New York Times bestseller, In the Midst of Winter is about three very different people who are brought together in a mesmerizing story that offers “a timely message about immigration and the meaning of home” (People).
During the biggest Brooklyn snowstorm in living memory, Richard Bowmaster, a lonely university professor in his sixties, hits the car of Evelyn Ortega, a young undocumented immigrant from Guatemala, and what at first seems an inconvenience takes a more serious turn when Evelyn comes to his house, seeking help. At a loss, the professor asks his tenant, Lucia Maraz, a fellow academic from Chile, for her advice.
As these three lives intertwine, each will discover truths about how they have been shaped by the tragedies they witnessed, and Richard and Lucia will find unexpected, long overdue love. Allende returns here to themes that have propelled some of her finest work: political injustice, the art of survival, and the essential nature of—and our need for—love.
Oh No ! I've read every one of Allende's novels and eagerly anticipated this one. I guess even someone as talented as Allende is going to have a miss from time to time. Her usual lyrical prose was, for the most part, missing in this novel. There were few times when I closed my eyes to savor what I had just read as I frequently did reading her other works.Even though the characters were well developed, they didn't seem real to me. The ending seemed rushed.I believe I read the idea for this novel was suggested to her by friends who knew it was time for her to begin a new novel. Maybe she wasn't ready. Maybe that was the problem.Entertaining, but implausible. Just not very good in my opinion. Other book club members loved it, but like other reviews I'd read it falls far short of what it could have been. The implausible plot takes away from the insights into the characters lives. It's written as though intended to be turned into a film than a a serious literary effort. It will entertain, but not much more. While I did appreciate learning more about the tragic lives of those Latin America, and to what lengths those who immigrate must go to in order to escape such heart wrenching experiences, it's impossible to get past the silliness of the plot in order to fully appreciate the story.Educational and a fun read as well. This was a pleasant surprise as this did not have build-up of some her earlier books. She essentially tells the life stories of three persons who were brought together by a car accident in the snow with a body in the back of the car. The young undocumented Guatemalan girl's story was particularly riveting, but the Allende character and the American professor were interesting as well. Then there was the ending, but we will not talk about that.
