Title: 1942 Pdf The Year That Tried Men's Souls
America’s first year in World War II, chronicled in this “page-turner” by the Pulitzer Prize–nominated author of Forrest Gump and The Generals (Publishers Weekly).

On December 7, 1941, an unexpected attack on American territory pulled an unprepared country into a terrifying new brand of warfare. To the generation of Americans who lived through it, the Second World War was the defining event of the twentieth century, and the defining moments of that war were played out in the year 1942.

This account covers the Allies’ relentless defeats as the Axis overran most of Europe, North Africa, and the Far East. But by midyear the tide began to turn. The United States finally went on the offensive in the Pacific. In the West, the British defeated Rommel’s panzer divisions at El Alamein while the US Army began to push the Germans out of North Africa. By the year’s end, the smell of victory was in the air.

1942, told with Winston Groom’s accomplished storyteller’s eye, allows us into the admirals’ strategy rooms, onto the battlefronts, and into the heart of a nation at war.

“When not drawing in readers with the narrative, Groom is impressing them with his masterful analyses.” —The Atlanta Journal-Constitution

“Groom has done an artful job of blending the many stories of 1942.” —The Anniston Star

It was good to remember how Nimitz, Halsey, Eisenhower and the other American leaders reversed what would seem like a lost cause I lived through it. It seemed like every day things got worse. I wanted to read a detailed history of that year to see if my recollection was accurate. It was. Finally came the naval battles of the Coral Sea and, especially, of Midway. At long last, commentator Gabriel Heatter's opening on his 9:00 pm news spot-"There's Good News Tonight"- was accurate. Mr. Groom has written a classic!A Disappointment I had several issues with this book. The book focuses primarily on the war with Japan in the Pacific, giving relatively little attention to what was happening in Europe with Germany. It is a book about the Pacific theater, with some almost random mention of the European theater. When the author does address the war with Germany, it comes largely as a distraction from his account of the Pacific. Equal treatment of both theaters and some history and commentary on how the Allies conducted both wars simultaneously would have made for a much more balanced and better book. The thesis that 1942 "tried men's souls" also was not convincingly presented. There is no support to the implicit assertion that 1942 was any worse than 1943-45. Finally, the book rather oddly concludes in 1942 and then jumps ahead to hastily try to wrap up how the war ended relative to the issues addressed in 1942. In doing so, much significant history is overlooked and perspective is sacrificed. In sum, this is an okay book about the Pacific theater in 1942. It presents a greater degree of Japanese cruelty and inhumanity than I thought existed. I knew the Japanese behaved badly, but the author paints an even worse picture that at times seems to border on Japan-bashing. This impression is reinforced by the lack of mention about how Germans treated their prisoners (or, for that matter, how the allies treated theirs).Superb I love Winston Groom and his books. This one was an eye opener for me. I have decent knowledge of WWII but this book expanded on that base by adding details and facts I either have forgotten or never knew. The bonus for me is Mr. Groom's writing style. This is a book that details some pretty gruesome things done by the Japanese to US soldiers and others but Mr. Groom can tell a tale in a way that at least the reader can get thru the material without tedium and endless statistics, facts and details. This book inspired me to do additional reading about WWII
